PLANE TABLE METHOD OF MAPPING
The plane table method is by performing the triangular or the intersecting line method. This involves using a plane flat paper, a scale, a sharp pointed pencil. This is different from other mapping methods as it involves performing mapping with basic available tools. It is mostly suitable for scouting as it avoids using of complex tools.
We must select stationary objects in order to perform mapping. This is because they can be used as reference points for another user. Moving objects may not be available to the observer at the given point of time. Hence we must locate the stationary objects.
Firstly using the compass to mark the north direction. After using the compass, now mark a point on the papper . From this point mark the ray pointing the actual line of sight to the first object. Similarly perform the same mapping to another stationary object.
Secondly move away from the current point to another parallel point. This will ensure that it will lead to intersection of points. Now mark the rays from the new point to the stationary objects. Extend the rays till they intersect at a point. These are the required points or the actual position of the stationary objects on the map.
This method is widely accepted, reliable and accurate in performing map of the given area.
