New sustainable Adventure House at Scouting Estate

Scouting Nederland opens new sustainable Adventure House at Scouting Estate Zeewolde

On the 18th of June Scouting Nederland opens the newly built Adventure House at Scouting Estate Zeewolde. Simply cutting a ribbon is not a Scoutlike way to do that, which is why 170 scouts and partners from all over the Netherlands will build an enormous Domino-track in order to officially open this sustainable Adventure House.

Construction of the Adventure House started a year and a half ago and recently the building hosted its first guests. The aim of the Adventure House is to give children of all ages the opportunity to sleep surrounded by nature. Children with and without disabilities, scouts and non-scouts from the Netherlands and abroad, are welcome to experience an unforgettable adventure in nature. The Scouting Estate Zeewolde is the hotspot for camps and stays for scouts, as well as families, schools, sports clubs and events. For companies the Scouting Estate is an excellent location to host teambuilding or networking events.

Support

Scouting was able to rely on multiple sponsors and donators. Scouting director Fedde Boersma: ‘Members of the National Postcode Lottery who together donated 1.5 million euros gave us a head start with the funds for the construction. We are also very thankful for the other foundations that supported us and helped us fund the Adventure House. Many donations were made by companies, individuals and funds to cover beds and other equipment in the accommodation. Lastly, we are also very thankful for our many volunteers who played a big role in the realisation of the house.’

Wishlist

Scouting president Jaap Boot is overjoyed with the grande opening of the Adventure House. ‘Developing this accommodation has been on Scoutings’ wishlist for years. Through the Adventure House we enable all children to go camping, young children as well als children with disabilities who have a hard time sleeping in a tent. At our Adventure House they can meet each other and play together, go hiking together, plays sports or go sailing. Together they are able to explore nature, which gives them self confidence, understanding of others and it broadens their social network. Other than that, the Adventure House is also a homebase for large events, such as Nawaka, the biggest waterscouting event in the Netherlands that will be held in August of this year.

About the building

The Adventure House, designed by Most Architcture and TomDavid, is a building with many natural elements. The large windows make people feel surrounded by nature. The sustainable building has sun collectors, grey water, a green roof and is made with recyclable materials. A colourful climbing wall is located in the middle of the building. There are 21 bedrooms that vary in size, from two beds to ten beds. The entire groundfloor is wheelchair accessible and a few bedrooms, restrooms and the kitchen are adapted to house people in wheelchairs. Groups that sleep over have access to two living rooms with their own fireplace.

Scout Centre of Excellence for Nature, Environment and Sustainability

Scouting Estate is one of the five Scout Centres of Excellence Scout  for Nature, Environment and Sustainability. 'With the completion of the Adventure House, Scouting Estate is a marvelous place to play in the nature, to learn about nature and the environment and to camp on the most sustainable way as possible', says Selina Roskam, of the Ducth SCENES team from Scouting Nederland.
