Jet Set Go

This Earth-Tribe defined activity was all about building a Paper Airplane made out of recycled paper and flying it the farthest. We called it the "Jet Set Go". This was designed for an age group of 8-18 years. Though the word 'farthest' makes it sound like a race, this was in fact designed to not have a competitive element rather involve more participation to understand the plane's design that soars the farthest. This activity brought about numerous learnings for the Scouts and Guides. It all began with Team building. The children were grouped per their Patrols which gave them the first impression of building planes with a collaboration. The time allotted for building their Planes was 20min. The immediate next process involved Critical thinking in which they were provided with 4 different kinds of recycled paper each differing in size, weight and texture and they ought to select one out of them. As they all chose, they began to experiment with almost 7 designs of planes as every individual felt it was best to have unique planes per Patrol. With the first round being an experimental one, all of them visualised and felt the need for a better design. That's when the Scouts and Guides intuitively thought and grasped the concepts of Gravity, Aerodynamic design, structural integrity of the plane and what not. With round two, almost all the planes crossed the average distances from the first round. Though the farthest distance wasn't recorded, it was still a matter of pride for the children to see their plane reach a step ahead from their previous experiment.
