Hi! My name is Maisarah and I am 11 years old. I have a passion to not waste food.

Nowadays we see a lot of food being thrown away but at the same time, there are so many hungry people that do not have enough food.

So I participated in a Wilayah Hijau project where we did urban farming at a community farm. We prepped the land for the nearby community to start a community gardening. I was even put in charge to lead a team (including adults) on what to do based on permaculture farming techniques. I like working with Wilayah Hijau because other than making use of idle land, they also empower the homeless to do farming so that they can earn a living.

I also volunteered with the Lost Food Project, where I sorted out excess food given by grocery shops and markets. I did this activity on a weekly basis. Being involved in this activity makes me realise that there is so much food wastage around us when there are so many people who are starving. Instead of throwing away these vegetables and fruits and clogging up the landfill, we go through them to see which ones are still edible. Most of them are actually still very much edible! So these food will then be donated to orphanages, old folks home or those who need food but cannot afford them.
