Brunei Scouts Association Organises 'Clean Up the World 2016' Campaign

18 SEPTEMBER 2016 _ The 'Clean Up the World 2016' campaign is celebrated simultaneously by millions of people all over the world. The Brunei Darussalam Scouts Association (PPNBD) holds it every third week of September. With this year's theme being 'Our Place... Our Planet... Our Responsibility', the campaign is organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in collaboration with the World Organisation of Scouts Movement (WOSM) and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The theme highlights how local action - taken by every community and volunteer partaking in a Clean Up the World activity - has a global impact. This programme is aimed at providing awareness and instilling an understanding on the importance of knowledge to this generation as well as their roles in keeping the Earth clean. This marked the seventh time that PPNBD has taken part in the campaign. Their first cleaning campaign was at Serasa Beach in 2010, the second at Tungku Beach, the third at Jerudong Beach, the fourth at the National Jamboree Site in Kampong Beribi, the fifth at the Scouts Complex, and last year's campaign was held at Muara Beach. This year, PPNBD held the campaign along a stretch of Berakas Beach, where a total of 250 kilogrammes of waste was collected.More than 100 Scouts members, comprising Scouts Commissioners, Scouts Leaders, Cub Scouts, Junior Scouts, Venture Scouts and Rover Scouts from 10 Scouts associations got together to ensure the event's success. The campaign was led by Executive Scouts Officer Zainudin bin Haji Ishak, who briefed the Scouts members on the 'Clean Up the World 2016' programme. Meanwhile, a similar cleaning campaign was also held at the Peranginan Beach, Kampong Sungai Liang in the Belait District by 10 members of the 3040 Open Scouts Troop Sungai Liang Village. photo by Zainudin Ishak
