Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts Learn About Caring for Animals

As part of the requirements for the Animal Friend badge (Beavers) and the Animal Carer badge (Cubs), the boys of the 21st Barbados Blackman and Gollop Scout Group, recently had an engaging and educational session with Mr. Timothy Maynard, a Veterinary Technician and Dog Trainer.

Mr. Maynard brought along his well-trained dog, Makaveli, and guided the Scouts through what it really means to care for a pet. As many parents say—a pet is a big responsibility, and the boys got a hands-on understanding of exactly why that is.

Topics covered included:
The importance of regular vet checks
Grooming routines and tools
Proper feeding habits and what dogs can and cannot eat
The value of training and obedience
Providing exercise, toys, and playtime for a healthy, happy pet

The boys were highly engaged, asking insightful questions throughout the session. The highlight? They even got the chance to feed and play with Makaveli, which made the experience both educational and fun!

Sessions like these not only help Scouts earn their badges but also foster compassion, responsibility, and a greater understanding of the animals we share our lives with.
