Aiming for the skies ... with air rockets
Mar 15, 2018, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan - It was a glorious afternoon as more than excited 60 Cubs, Akelas and Adult volunteers from the 80th West Seremban Scout Group tried their hands at launching bottles from air rocket launchers and aimed for the skies.
The air rocket launchers were constructed by hand using 15mm PVC pipes which were held in place by PVC glue. The rockets were 1.5L plastic soft drink bottles. It took me an entire afternoon to get the supplies from three separate stores and the most difficult part to source in Seremban was the tyre air valve.
Everyone assembled on time and soon forgot about the afternoon sun - everyone enjoyed their first experience with air rockets, launching the "rockets" with a countdown then the rocket went "zoooooosh" about 100 to 200 feet in the air, immediatedly followed by thunderous cheers from the Cubs!
I briefed all Adults involved about the safety measures and instructed in the use of the air rocket launchers. We even had two rehearsed launches and the Adults were also excited to try their hands at the air rocket launchers that I made.
The Cubs worked together according to their groups and soon discovered that working together to load the launcher, attaching the bicycle pump head to the tire air valve and using the bicycle pump to increase the air pressure, made the whole task easier. "It''s easier when we work together, Akela!" And this vocal realisation from a pint-sized 9-year-old Cub made me swell with pride. Scouting does wonders for kids!!!
At an average rate of one launch every eight minutes, more than 50 successful launches were made that memorable afternoon. It was, in the words of a Cub, "a super awesome afternoon"!
