Nature Walk Adventure
Learning Objectives
• Explore and appreciate nature.
• Understand the benefits of spending time outdoors and being physically active.
• Develop observational skills and curiosity about the environment.
• Understand the connection between physical activity and a balance diet.
Instructions
- Organize a nature walk in a nearby park, nature reserve, or outdoor space.
- Provide participants with baskets or bags (let’s try zero waste!) to collect items such as leaves, flowers, rocks, and other interesting natural objects.
- Encourage children to explore their surroundings, observe plants and animals, and collect items of interest.
- Facilitate discussions about the benefits of spending time outdoors and being physically active, such as improving mood, reducing stress, and promoting physical health.
- Allow children to freely explore and interact with nature, asking questions and sharing observations along the way.
A twist for this activity for the older age groups or if parents/guardians are involved in the activity:
- Make it a full-on connection with environment, instead of collecting items they found in nature encourage everyone to pick up garbage that’s on the path.
- Make the same connection as written before, but also add that helping the planet is a great way to move our body!
Debrief
- Gather participants together after the nature walk to discuss their experiences and discoveries.
- Ask them to share one thing they observed or learned during the walk.
- Guide the conversation towards the benefits of spending time outdoors and being physically active, using open-ended questions such as:
- How did you feel while exploring nature? Did you notice any changes in your mood or energy levels?
- What was your favourite part of the nature walk? Why?
- How can you incorporate more outdoor activities into your daily routine?
- Encourage them to reflect on the importance of connecting with nature and the environment.
- Discuss ways to continue exploring and appreciating nature, such as regular outdoor adventures or nature-themed activities.
