Healthy Plate Craft
Learning Objectives
- Understand the concept of a balanced meal and its components.
- Learn to identify and categorize different food groups.
- Foster creativity and fine motor skills through art and craft activities.
Instructions
- Provide each child with a paper plate and a variety of craft materials such as coloured paper, markers, glue, and scissors.
- Explain to the children that they will be creating a collage of a balanced meal on their paper plate.
- Encourage children to use the craft materials to represent different food groups such as fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy.
- As children work on their crafts, facilitate discussions about the importance of including a variety of foods in their meals and the benefits of a balanced diet.
- Once the collages are complete, display them for the children to admire and discuss
Debrief
- Begin the debrief by asking each participant to describe their collage and the foods they included.
- Guide the conversation towards the concept of a balanced meal and the importance of including foods from each food group.
- Use open-ended questions to prompt reflection and critical thinking, such as:
- What did you learn about healthy eating while creating your collage?
- Can you identify which food groups are represented in your collage?
- How can you use this knowledge to create balanced meals in your everyday life?
- Reinforce the idea that eating a variety of foods helps provide the body with the nutrients it needs to grow and stay healthy.
- Encourage children to share their collages with their families and discuss the importance of balanced nutrition at home.
- This activity is design for more than one age group, so make sure that the explanation given to the participants correspond to their age group. The older they are, the more specific the explanation (you can use the available information in the challenge document, YUNGA nutrition badge or any reliable source of information you prefer).
