Zero Plastic Zero Polythene of Negombo City in Sri Lanka
Negombo is famous as Little Rome of Sri Lanka & having gloden beaches. Negombo is a very beautiful and a famous tourist destination in Sri Lanka. Also Negombo is multi cultural & multi religious city. As Negombo Scouts we saw there are lot of Ploythene and plastics are polluting our city so we have decided under the leadership of mine to start the zero plastic & zero polythene of Negombo city. According to our plan we have initiate this project during the 1st Negombo Scout Seaborette 2020 which was held on 6th March to 9th March 2020. Under the theme of "Life of Land" the 15th Sustainable Development Goal.
For the first stage of the Zero Plastic Zero Plythene of Negombo city we have inagurated the project with the participation of Negombo Mayor his Loardship Hon. Dayan Lanza & Western Province of Sri Lanka Education Director Mr. Nonis and we have sent the scouts as Scout troop wise under the guidance of their Scout Leaders and Nationational MOP Coordinators to the selected four areas (Bolawalana, Kadol Uyana, Thaladuwa & Kurana) in Negombo city as the first stage.
From their they have coolected the platics and polythene from every house in the selected ares and given a non woven bag which was sponsored by Dettol (Reckitt benckiser Sri Lanka) for each house and our scouts covered 2000 houses. After the collecting plastics & polythene four lorries went and taken all the ploythene and plastics and the total weight of that is nearly 1400kgs and we have given to the recycling center.
It was a very sucessful project as well as we had an oppertunity to give aweness of Zero waste and to give a wide publicity about Scouting among the areas. Scouts also gained a good experience as well as they have enjoyed the project.
The only drawback we have seen is if we noticed the house owners earlier then they can arranged the plastics and polythene more and can give us as soon as we reached their houses.
