Working Bikes Bike Drive Collection

Working Bikes Bike Drive Collection

My project was a bike drive collection for Working Bikes, a non-for-profit organization assisting third world countries. The bikes collected at my drive will change the lives of people faced with poverty in a developing country. These bicycles will provide reliable transportation to access jobs, education, farms, markets and medical centers. Teachers will use these bikes to reach distant classrooms and farmers will use them to transport crops to markets. Some of these bikes will also be turned into pedal powered machines that will husk coffee, pump water, generate electricity and wash clothes. Locally, my bike drive helped benefit my community by keeping unwanted bicycles out of our local landfill. On the day of my drive, donated bicycles were collected and prepped for shipping. All bike pedals were removed and cable tied to their respective frames. The handlebars were loosened and turned horizontally to compact the bicycles for shipment. Miscellaneous parts were separated, organized and boxed for shipping. All bikes collected were loaded, transported, stored and then delivered to my benefitting organization where they were unloaded. In addition to collecting bikes on the day of the drive, I also held a bake sale and sold Working Bikes t-shirts and pint glasses. All of the funds raised were donated to Working Bikes to assist with their shipping costs so additional shipping expenses were not passed on to the recipient organization. On December 6, 2014 Working Bikes shipped the 300 bikes I collected to Ghana, Africa to the Village Bicycle Project.
