Vision For All : Scout-led Free Eye Camp

Scouts are dedicated to serving their communities and helping those in need. I wanted to help an organization host a free eye camp to improve access to healthcare for underserved populations. An organization called Al-Basar noticed a lack of access to eye care services in our community and identified a particular group of people who may be at risk for eye problems, such as elderly individuals or those living in poverty.
Implementing this free eye camp project required careful planning and execution. We worked with the organization to identify a suitable location for the camp and secure the necessary equipment and supplies. We helped set up the camp, including registration desks, exam stations, and a waiting area. Also helped direct patients, manage crowds, and ensure a smooth flow of operations; Played a critical role in assisting medical professionals and volunteers in providing services to patients.
In addition to improving access to healthcare, this free eye camp had several other positive impacts on the community. It raised awareness about the importance of eye care and preventative measures, such as regular eye exams and the use of protective eyewear. This camp also promoted community engagement, encourage volunteerism, and fostering a sense of social responsibility
Organizing this free eye camp project offered me several valuable learning opportunities. We learned about the importance of teamwork and collaboration in executing a project successfully. Coordinating with the organization, medical professionals, and volunteers requires clear communication, delegation, and effective leadership. It equipped me with valuable skills, knowledge, and attitudes that can benefit me in tmy personal and professional lives.
