USO San Antonio
In a city with one of the nation's largest active and retired military populations, it is a clear and easy choice for Troop 285 to serve those who serve us... lifting the spirit of America’s troops and their families through the San Antonio USO.
The young men of Troop 285 are extremely proud to volunteer their time and vast energy at the USO.... to Honor, Thank, and Support our Troops in San Antonio, Texas.
Originally, the troop stepped up with over 100 man hours to paint both the downtown and airport USO facilities. The dining hall, game and computer rooms, plus rest areas, all freshly painted, are home to 10,000 military visitors a month.
This one time project turned into a continuing mission of service that has only enhanced the bond between Troop 285 and the USO.
Now, one Saturday each month, troop members serve a hot lunch to hungry and appreciative service men and women visiting the downtown center. Over 1200 meals have already been dished up just this summer.
When the troop noticed the old and faded flags at the facilities, they immediately purchased and donated two new, rich and spectacular US Flags that now proudly greets everyone who walks through the front doors. In addition, Troop 285 performed a reverent and honorable retirement ceremony for the old flags that proudly flew at the USO for decades.
Often times, over the past year, a service man will strike up meaningful conversations with the scouts. Inevitably, it starts off with a big smile and an energetic ... “Y’all are a Scout Troop? I am an Eagle Scout!”
