Training In Dialogue

Racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and religious intolerance are at the root of many contemporary national and international tensions and armed conflicts. Efforts to gradually eliminate these sources of injustice are integral to the global agenda for peace and non-violent approaches to conflict transformation. Unfortunately they are deep-rooted in Fiji amongst major ethnic groups (Indians and Fijian) resulting in the politically motivated military and civilian coups of 1987, 2000 and 2006. This political turmoil had brought about suffering to the innocent majority who are caught in the middle of these conflicts. Scouting is taking the initiative to begin a process of reconciliation and understanding through the communities. Mr Imraz Ali, MOP coordinator from Fiji with Chief Commissioner Jone Naisau and LogNadan promoted peace by Dialogue programmes in Fiji in 3 different Dialogue sessions. These sessions were conducted in 3 divisions of Fiji. The objective of the project was: •To train 75 Scout Leaders (50% Fijian & 50% Indo-Fijians) from 25 districts to pilot the dialogue programme •To enable scout leaders to be aware of Cultural Understanding of Fiji’s Ethnic Groups   through different Cultural Communication styles. To enable Scout Leaders from 25 districts of Fiji to address racism in communities of their respective scout districts through reconciliation and understanding indigenous rights and convention on the Elimination of all forms of discrimination.
