A Thousand Voices of Scouting Standing Together for World Peace

As a Rover I am currently undertaking my Baden-Powell Award. For this one of the badges that I am doing is the Project Badge. For a Rover to acheive this badge they must choose a project subject. The subject that I have choosen is Origami the art of paper folding. When I was researching origami's history I came across the story of a Japanese girl called Sadako Sasaki. Sadako was two years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, and was latter diagnosed with leukemia in 1955 os a result of the explosion. while Sadako was in hospital a friend folded her a peace crane. It is believed that if you fold a thousand cranes you wish will be granted. So Sadako started folding cranes with every piece of paper that she could fold. At first she was wishing for good health, but as she grew sicker and weaker she began to wish for world peace. Sadako Sadly passed away having folded 644 cranes. Her friends folded the remaing cranes on her behalf, and they began raising money for a monument to be built, and as a result in 1958 the Children's Peace Monument was unveilded in Hiroshima's Peace Park. Now every year on the 6th of August, Peace day is commemorated and people from all over the world send paper cranes to the park. So for this project I have learnt how to fold a peace crane and I have designed a mural that consists of the world badge with the section colours around it. I am teaching joeys, cubs, scouts, venturers, rovers and leaders how to fold a crane andthe crane that they fold will go into the mural with there name on it. So that as the biggest youth organisation and peace organisation we can show our supprot for the need for world peace. In doing this I am sharing Sadako's story as well as teaching the younger youth members how important they voices are in acheiving world peace for their futor. My team and I are planning to take the Mural to the Children;s Peace Monument on the 6th of August 2014.
