Sports For Society
This project started with my Eagle Scout Project. For me, the Eagle Scout project represented a way of helping other young men and woman engage in activitied that would leave them along a righteous path, leaning away from violence, and towards service. While it may have been easier to build a bench or something close to that nature, I wanted my project to have a more tangible impact and carry out a legacy. I seeked out ways I could help the community that someone else was not already doing because I did not want to "compete" so to speak with other organizations that were fighting for a good cause. I came upon the Richmond Police Activities League and learnt about what they were doing and I also found out that there weren't many, if any, organizations outside of the Police Activities League to help them. To combat this and make sure that their organization is able to fully run and function, I decided to undertake a drive to provide them with enough equipment for them to run summer and after school programs that assisted under priveledged children in the city of Oakland. I carried out a drive in Foster City with the help of my troop, Troop 47, and it was a success. In the end we collected over 300 pieces of equipment and the look of gratitude on the faces of the people working in RPAL made it all worth it. I also became a Brotherhood member in the Order of the Arrow, a boyscouts Honor Society, and there I learned more about the boyscout message and giving back through the community, not only through the things you do, but the examples you set. I decided to expand my project and turn it into something bigger, not just a one time thing. I ended up creating Sports for Society, a community service initiative I founded aimed in helping steer children away from potentiala buse and violence and directing their energy into something more positive. While it may be unusual to some why I exactly chose this field, because I myself only play sports recreationally, I realized that this area in my community needed someone or something to support it in its goals. I identified it as an area in my community that needed help and leadership and decided to do my part. We held another drive in December of 2012, in which we were able to bring out around 60 volunteers and collect hundreds of sporting equipment along with fitness items and donate it to the local YMCA for the work they have been doing. I hope to see my project grow and help even more organizations out, maybe even help them out world-wide.
