Setiawangsa Scout In National Vaccination Programme May 2021 - June 2021
The Greek philosopher Aristotle once said that the essence of life is “to serve others and do good,” and this is in line with the Scout's promise "To Help Other People At All Time" it seems an increasing number of us are starting to wake up and see why scouting in particular is important. People are starting to understand how serving and helping each other and different communities benefits not just others but ourselves, too. Every day our scouts help keep communities across Malaysia. They could be providing first aid at an event, helping other living creature or be helping behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly. In the Malaysian National Covid-19 vaccination programme which was launch in April 2021. We realise that we can play an indespencible role in assisting this nationwide programme.
Our engagement in this nationwide programme provides with the opportunity to become active members of their community and has a lasting, positive impact on society at large. Scouting which is familiar with community service enables us to acquire life skills and knowledge, as well as provide a service to those who need it most. These are some benefits of our project :
a) Psychological effects as it increases overall life satisfaction and improve feel good factor
b) Social effects Through this programme we engage with the community, creates special bonds with the population being served, and increases social awareness and responsibility
c) Cognitively it helps us in enhancing our personal knowledge, grow from new experiences, and develop better interpersonal communication skills.
Using our own proactive intiative, we will inspire other scout member to be resourceful in solve problems creatively with minimal guidance, structure or resources is a special thing indeed. “Coming up with a strategy that compensates for the budget needs a problem-solving attitude. As this programme is a month long, we hope to inspire scouts member about time-management skills, as well as patience and creativity in getting things done when resources are scarce or non-existent. There's also a situation where you work with people alerts potential employers that you’ve likely developed these abilities. As time goes by, we found that importance of soft skills including communication, leadership and collaborative skills, all of which are invaluable lesson for us.
As quoted from Lord Baden Powell himself "We must change boys from a 'what can I get' to a 'what can I give' attitude." In a nutshell, we hope that our deed is a powerful message to other scout member locally or other region to take an active role in participating in local battle against Covid-19 pandemic by any means. It could be as easy as ushering community during the programme to a more medically sound personel to be involved and more understanding with the community and also appreciate what can we have.
In a long run, we hope that our experience can be applied in our scouting life-long journey in future as well as inspire other scout member. As this is the first time, we other scout colleagues will improvise in future and come out with "out of the box" ideas on what can we contribute to the mankind. One last shout "This is our time!! Let's make a difference to a better future" and "Salam Pengakap".
