Sershong Tshechu: Voluntary Service

Popularly known as 'Serzhong Lhakhang,' Donga Kuenzang Choeling Gonpa stands majestically on the hill, overlooking the Serzhong gewong and Gelephu town.

Every year coinciding with the Descending Day of Lord Buddha(22nd day of 9th month according to lunar calendar), the Lhakhang celebrates its foundation day and hosts tsechu for a day.

I am very much delighted and privileged to be a part it. By virtue of being cultural coordinator of my school (Norbuling Central School), I got an opportunity to coordinate cultural items. I took a lead role to teach and practice cultural items. 20 students(10 boys and 10 girls) were given a vigorous practice for around a month. Total of 8 items including 2 items from staffs were practiced and performed.

Additionally, 50 volunteer students were also deployed during the day for various purposes such as serving refreshment for public, crowd controlling, waste management and dish washing.

The day started off with unfurling of thongdrel and showcasing of nangtens. And followed by mask dances and cultural items as per the programe list. More than 1500 devotees were congregated on the court yard of Sershong lhakhang to get blessings and watch the day long programe.

Apart from the family of Norbuling Central School, the tsechu had the support of Royal Bhutan Police, Friends of Police, villagers from Serzhong gewog and finally, the devoted pilgrims.
