On the 2nd July 2016, after 9 months of preparation, the Scout Groups from across the South Coast and Tablelands Region came together with the State Youth Council to run a Scout Open Day for the entire community, with a special welcome to those new to Australia. The day involved 12 different activities including Paracord bracelet making, face painting, command course, the Whirly Gig and a Sausage Sizzle. With over 80 members of the public participating including 20 newly arrived refugee families, the event fostered inclusivity and ensured that the local community saw Scoutings presence within the Region. The feedback was incredible, with members of the public asking "Does this event run all week?" and "How do I get my children into Scouting?". It was also wonderful to watch different age groups within Scouting and different Scout Groups working together for a great cause. The weather was perfect and everyone there had an incredible time. Over $200 was raised that will now be used to run a Scout Camp for Refugee Children in the area and work on a uniform pool for the less fortunate. The event team are entirely grateful to all of the organisations that assisted us with the event, including Nadine K Designs for donated food and drinks for the Sausage Sizzle, Bunnings Warehouse for the donation of paracord, Illawarra Sunrise Rotary for their kind donation of $400 and assistance on the day, local radio and news stations including Vox fm, I98 and Win Tv for their assistance in advertising and Austinmer Rover Crew for raising the funds for park hire. Another big thank you goes out to the Scout Groups in the region for their assistance both in the lead up to the day and during the event.
