Scouts from Mexico feed a village in need through Messengers of Peace project

It started with the publication of a study that looked at how much money a family in Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo spent on food on a daily basis. The study found that on average, families spend $3.5 per meal. But there was an exception. Families in the remote village of Solferino, located roughly 3 hours drive from Cancún spent only $1 per meal. Having read the study, Scouts from the Tan Tan Chen Scout Group in Cancún decided to take action. They started a project, under the banner of the Messengers of Peace initiative, which collected groceries from non-governmental organizations, educational institutions and civic groups. The purpose of this effort was to bring these food donations to families who live in the village of Solferino. “I was asked by some journalists if the point of this project was to help eradicate extreme poverty. My answer was that what we are doing is bringing hope to those families,” explained José Luis Hernández Bravo from the “Tan Tan Chen” Scout Group. Apart from helping a community in need, this project also helped Cub Scouts and Ventures understand the importance of assisting people and keeping to their Scout duty. This time, the Tan Tan Chen Scout Group was able to assemble and distribute 110 grocery packs. Next time, their goal is to distribute 1000.
