Scouts are Prepared for Natural Disasters

Scouts’ timely response during emergencies is a call of service, as they are known to help during unfortunate events especially when disaster strikes. We have seen this significant trait of Scouts in Japan when a major earthquake and tsunami struck north-eastern Japan in March last year. In the midst of this tragedy, Scouts in Japan stood up to face the challenge. Scout Disaster Relief Centres were set up where 1,600 Scouts responded and engaged in 160 activities including removing rubbles, cleaning up mud in houses, schools and roadside ditches filled with muddy sludge. Others were involved in fundraising, installing shower booths and boilers at the evacuation centres, organising Scout games for children and Nature and Smile camps, organising tours to the sweets and snacks factory. Scouts packed message cards, flower seeds and stationeries, which were sent out to schools, and they shuttled volunteers in free shuttle-bus services with Scouts logo and disaster relief banners. Messengers of Peace, which has not only helped further extend Scouting’s role in the ongoing rehabilitation process but also strengthen the disaster preparedness training of many other Scouts.
