Scouts 4 Climate

Scouts 4 Climate

Our Earth is under a lot of pressure. Global temperatures are rising, oceans are becoming more polluted and we are witnessing the loss of nature and biodiversity. The Earth needs our help, and who better to put our planet on the path to recovery than the largest generation of young people in history?

The EarthTribe is a global movement for environmental action, a community uniting young people around the world to become environmental leaders. Learn how your choices have an impact on our planet, and discover your path to create a brighter and more sustainable future. Become champions for nature, advocates for better choices, innovators for clean energy and healers for a healthier planet. Taking the lead for environmental action begins with us, TOGETHER!

When it comes to taking action for the environment it includes:

i) Help reduce the loss of biodiversity

ii) Take responsibility for the impact that your choices have on the environment

iii) Take action to protect the Earth’s climate

iv) Help reduce pollution to protect our ecosystem

PLASTIC TIDE TURNERS

The Tide Turners Plastic Challenge is a global youth movement to fight plastic pollution around the world. It is designed to inspire young adults to reflect upon their plastic consumption, discover solutions to reduce this consumption, and lead change in their homes, communities, institutions and offices.

This is an initiative initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme was brought to India by the State Chief Commissioner of the Bharat Scouts and Guides, Shri. P. G. R. Sindhiya.

The Challenge involves three competing levels

Level 1: Entry level Activities are designed to get you thinking about your own consumption and what simple actions you can take to reduce single-use plastic from your day to day life.

Level 2: With the leader level activities, you will delve deeper to explore, investigate and take action about single-use plastic consumption and its management within your home, neighborhood or at a community level.

Level 3: In the Champion level, you will be ready to scale-up efforts to make a greater impact. Activities would include taking action to promote sustainable consumption & production by influencing consumers and businesses. You will educate others and continue your advocacy efforts by turning your learnings and actions into educational assets like videos, comics, storybooks, GIFs etc

SCOUTS GO SOLAR

The Scouts Go Solar project (SGS) is an environmental partnership between the World Organization of the Scout Movement, Greenpeace and Solafrica, a Swiss NGO, working in close collaboration with the Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) in Switzerland. The partnership started in July 2013 as Scouts from all over the world were trained at KISC to become Scout Solar Ambassadors. There they gained practical experience on how to organize and run solar energy activities with children and young people and on basic solar energy principles, including self-assembling of a solar torch for Scouts, a do-it-yourself solar suitcase for camps and a solar campfire. They were then encouraged to bring the projects back to their own organizations.

Solar Energy Harvesting

It is the process of capturing and storing solar energy which is radiated from the sun. Then it is converted from light or heat energy to electrical energy by suitable methods. Solar energy is free and rather available in many parts around the world. In just 1 year, the sun can provide the earth with 15000 times more energy than the atomic and fuel energy actually needed during the year. If the fossil fuel resources are consumed at the present rate, all the fossil fuels will exhaust. This will create an unprecedented energy crisis on the earth.

Panda Badge

The Panda Badge is part of World Scouting’s revamped environment programme, the Earth Tribe Alliance, that engages young people in education about sustainable development. The Panda Badge specifically addresses responsible consumption, helping young people to better understand the impact of their consumer habits on the environment and how to make more sustainable choices. Scouts can earn the badge by completing three levels of age-appropriate educational activities and carrying out community projects in service of the environment.

The launch of the new Panda Badge comes at a time when nature is in crisis. The worsening impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss, ocean pollution, soil degradation and water scarcity are threatening the collapse of our planet’s ecosystems, along with the clean air, water, food and stable climate that they provide.

The panda badge by the World Scouting Programme in association with the World Wildlife fund is one of the initiatives towards the most serious issues prevalent in today’s world. Working towards climate change and loss of biodiversity is the need of the hour.. As we know the well known saying “Prevention is better than cure.”
