SARAWAK SCOUTS HELPING FLOOD VICTIMS
The current situation in Sarawak is experiencing bad weather, in addition to the rising sea level causing water to be released into the river area. This situation has caused some areas in Kuching, Sarawak affected by floods. This incident has happened in the last 2 weeks until today. With that, local scouts around the area have taken steps to go down the field to help the authorities evacuate flood victims & assist in temporary settlement areas.
Community service started on January 14, 2021, and we have divided it into 6 sections severely affected by the floods. All rover scout members with adult leaders together assist in terms of manpower and resources. Local scouts were sent to the following areas, SMK Batu Kawa, SJK Chung Hua Sejijak, SMK Sejijak, Dewan Masyarakat Sejijak, SK Che Buyong, and Dewan Masyarakat Gita Semarak to assist authorities to maintain balance in order. Scouts with specific skill set were sent to the community council hall given priority to help with the severely affected area.
In this emergency response project to a major flood in Malaysia, specifically in Sarawak state area, total numbers of fifty (50) rovers scout from the different group came together with one purpose, is to help their community with current issues at hand. With the help of five (5) leaders from each rover crew, this emergency response project successfully gathered skilful individuals to assist their affected community in the area.
At the earliest dawn, our local scout arrived at the community council hall to provide back up to local authorities which exhausted and running low with energy due to several days of rescuing mission. Later then they were divided into group to the designated area and received instructions for the works need to be done in specific areas. In additions, they have carried out every task given to them and lightened the burden of local authorities, especially the social welfare department.
The positive impact of this project is that scouts have shown their capabilities in providing help to their community, by helping lightened the burden of the local authorities in the form of energy and manpower because they were well aware that local authorities are currently in shortage of manpower and needed help, scouts received tremendous praise for their concern of the health of local authorities.
By following the motto of Rover Scout, serving the community and learning new things in life. Besides, teaches them, there are others in need of help and they are always ready. Taking notes of the current condition, scouts are aware of this situation might repeat itself in the future, as a scout they are ready and well prepared to face the floods in the future. The local authorities and NGOs involved are very much appreciated when it comes to helping and they are very grateful for the help extended.
