Santa Parade and Food Drive for Community
With the rising cost of rents and food in our local area, our Scouts wanted to help people in need over the holidays. Many senior citizens and families with young children do not have enough food, or personal health care items such as diapers, formula, soap, or even adult incontinence products. They researched community organizations where they could volunteer and be of help.
We partnered with our County's Fire Department for their annual Santa Parade and Food Drive which started during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The parade brings joy to the local community and also serves as a collection mechanism for food to fill the local Food Bank to help those in need.
Our Scouts planned and executed a complete overhaul of Santa's sleigh. They also rode with the parade for two weeks in our city and collected 2,500 pounds of food which was donated to the Food Bank.
The Scouts learned project management and how to organize a large group of volunteers based on ability. All Scouts took part in the design and painting process. They self sorted based on paint skills. The older Scouts rode in the parade during school nights in adverse weather conditions collecting food, while those not able went to the food bank to unload the food. They learned how the food was distributed at the Food bank and how they could come back and help during the summer.
