Santa Days at Castle Saunderson & Community Project
On the first weekend of December, 750 Beaver Scouts (7-9 year olds) attended the annual Santa Days in Castle Saunderson International Scout Centre. As well as getting to see Santa and have lots of fun at with all his Elves in Elf World they took on with two projects to help their local communities.
Each group that came to the days brought with them sleeping bags, hats, gloves and scarves to be donated to homeless people in our society. In each bag the Beaver Scouts made a Christmas card to be given to the person receiving the donation, letting them know that someone will be thinking of them this Christmas.
Also one of the activities they took part in was to make place mats to be given to their local Meals on Wheels service. Meals on Wheels is a community based initiative where hot meals are provided to those that maybe unable to cook for themselves and most likely are old and/or lonely.
The idea is simple; each Beaver Scout coloured in a Christmas scene which was then laminated to be used as a place mat. We're sure that these mats will bring a smile to the faces of those that receive them.
The project was shared on the Castle Saunderson Facebook Page and already lots of people were in touch, looking to do something similar, hopefully we've inspired lots more people to do the same.
The whole weekend was put together by a fantastic team of volunteer Venture Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Rover Scouts and Scouters from both Scouting Ireland and the Scout Association, Northern Ireland Scout Council.
