Safe way
In August 2023, I was hit by a car while biking home from school in a busy cycle lane, suffering multiple broken bones and head trauma that led to an induced coma. I spent months in a wheelchair, and still face lasting effects. The experience revealed the danger of that bike path and inspired me to push for safety improvements to protect all road users and promote sustainable transport and healthy lifestyle.
First things first I analyzed the avenue and where the cycle lane crossed it. Then I spoke to one of my scout colleagues about what could be made in that spot. I researched about our traffic laws and we figured on proposing a catwalk, then we splited functions. She made an illustration for the project of how it would look like and I started writing a document to propose it to Itaipu, the enterprise responsable for the maintance of that avenue and cycle lane.
I learned that even with cycle lanes, sometimes it isn't enough to assure the safety of cyclists. There is always a way to improve security, exercising citizenship and leaving the world a little better than how I found it, benefiting multiple people.
