Re-Usable Sanitary Pads for Girls and Women living in rural areas/ Rwanda
Reusable sanitary pads projects can have several positive impacts. First of all, by equipping girls with knowledge as well with the equipment to face their menstruation, this is an important step to the empowerment of girl . The workshop made them aware of menstrual hygiene and can help them to understand the biological reasons behind menstruation and therefore helped them to break myths and taboos.
The knowledge transfer about menstruation and menstrual hygiene and the reflection about the own body, hopefully gave the women confidence and help them to gain a positive perspective on their own body. This is an important step of female empowerment and gender equality. As the girl are often also mothers etc., they will be hopefully ambassadors of the gained knowledge in their families and pass on the knowledge about menstruation to their friend etc., so that probably the future generations will be provided with sufficient information about their menstruation in their families.
On the other hand, by teaching the girls in preparing their own reusable sanitary pads, they did not only gained knowledge about reusable sanitary pads, but also have access to a long-term solution for their menstruation. Instead of relying for example on pieces of fabric, they have an alternative which is more sustainable, effective and hygienic. Especially for school girls this can be very important, as they may have feared to attend school during their menstruation, because they feared to expose themselves. We hope to train them good enough.
