RCI-Rodriguez: SWA Voluntary Service - First Service

On April 18, 2017, the Scouts of Roosevelt College Rodriguez that took part in the SWA Development Team, along with their Team Consultant, Sir Lyel Lim, have marked this day as their first visit to Cottolengo Filipino. They arrived at 7:00 AM in the morning, all set and excited. As soon as they’ve arrived, they’ve immediately set up the visuals, sound system, and activities to be used to teach the children of the said place. Along with their preparation, the soon to be scouts of Cottolengo Filipino have also been preparing, doing their morning routine and the such before they head on to the activities. Preparing was actually one of the hardest thing to do for the Scouts, and it took them awhile since they have readied for this. The Scouts have prepared several lessons and activities that will ensure how fun this day will be. They finished preparing on 8:00 AM later that day. As soon as they’ve been done, the children of Cottolengo Filipino were done preparing as well. They held an Opening Ceremony at 8:00 AM led by all the Scouts, executing the proper raising of the flag and such; leaving the children of Cotolenggo in awe, excitement was filling their eyes. After the small Opening Ceremony, they immediately preceded to the lesson proper, starting 8:15 AM. The Scouts assigned to teach for the day taught all about the National Anthem of the Philippines and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Philippine flag. They prepared a short video, along with short explanations on how it is properly sang and said, keeping in mind that they are soon to be scouts. Each has properly executed the scout sign and has sang the National Anthem properly. Though, it was quite hard for the children, each had a guide from the team and they have helped them, completing each and every activity. Smiles were imprinted on each of their faces, and the Scouts knew they wanted more and more of these. For each activity finished, the Scouts would give rewards. The first activity started 9:30 AM and had ended at 10:45 AM; it was about the colors of the Philippine flag, where they were given a copy of the flag with no colors and, with the coloring materials the Scouts have provided, the once black and white figure of the Philippine flag will have their colors properly placed on. Again, the children were all happy as they were coloring, having fun with each of their guides. As soon as they have finished, each had a picture with their artwork. Next, from 10:45 AM to 11:15 AM, they had an activity where they will fix a puzzle, which will be the Philippine flag when finished. Even though it was quite tricky, they also have had a blast completing the activity. Each child was given a piece, and each were given a chance to put their puzzle piece down. After all the excitement they have gone through, all the hard work has made them tired. On 11:30 AM, they were given a 45-minute snack session. They were given biscuits and juices to fill up their energy. As soon as they’ve finished, they’ve realized that it was already the end of this day’s happiness. All were sad to say goodbye to the Scouts, wishing that they had spent a longer time together since, they have formed new bonds with each other. The Scouts hope to make the first PWD Troop in the Philippines happen, making each day quite memorable and exciting. They also hope to instill in each the good values of a Scouts, thus, making them prepare for this event more and more, just to ensure it would be worthwhile and exciting.
