PROMOTING BEHAVIOUR CHANGE TOWARDS SOLAR ENERGY

Raising awareness to fight against myths circulating about solar energy and its application at home and different places. Due to the lack of know how, many people in our country are rushing into buying solar equipment without the fundamental understanding of how it works which has resulted in poor system designs or negative behaviour torwards solar energy. As scouts, we saw this as an opportunity to start raising awareness as a way to foster solar application in many places.
With a team of 5 we organised a 3 day tent camp sensitisation workshop at Salamis Park in Harare. Our main goal for this workshop was to promote behaviour change and improve appreciation for solar energy. We invited participants from University of Zimbabwe ,Girl Guides association , School teachers and community members whom we spent the weekend together sharing experiences. The campsite is off grid so all participants had to use power from the solar suitcase for charging and lighting at night.
About 200 people will benefit from this workshop through the commitment made by the participants to use their influence at work ,school etc to reach out to more.
It was quite an awesome experience having a solar workshop that is completely dependant on solar generated power for its entire energy needs. The bush camp setup was a first step into training all participants about behaviour change as they would only use solar energy when its neccessary. In future, I would add more portable mobile solar power stations in future to reduce traffic on a single one. I will put togehter enough material for experiment to promote a hands on approach for individuals.
