
Preventing Violent-extremism Training for Scouts
This project was organized based on an empirical case of a terrorist perpetrators radicalized in a public school in Jakarta, Indonesia. Scouting education and scouts can prevent violent extremism ideas from the early beginning to contribute to the prevention of violent extremism.
The initial project was planned to be a face to face training. Hence, the pandemic began in March 2020, the project was executed smoothly despite of the Covid-19 pandemic in a virtual setting.
This project was organized with the cooperation between a team of experts including myself from Universitas Indonesia Terrorism Studies Program and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Headquarter.
40 participants involved in this training from six different districts in Jakarta. At the end of the training, participants were divided into six groups, each groups were asked to make a campaign advocating peace and social cohesion based on the knowledge gained from the training and upload it to their social media. The overall impact of this project can not be calculated quantitatively.
The evaluation of the project recommends that the same training kit designed by the team under my leadership should be conducted annually with broader participants, young members and adults.
In the future we will work together with experts from Universitas Indonesia and also with the National Counter-terrorism Agency.
