Peacelight 2012
On December 15, 2012, members of BSA Troop 427 of Vienna, Austria, in cooperation with Crew 3 of Vicenza, Italy cheerfully influenced the message of peace by actively participating and assisting with the coordination and ensuring the involvement of BSA units in the annual Peacelight Ceremony held in Vienna – the point at which the light is first brought to after being retrieved from Bethlehem. Delegates from nearly all World Scouting organizations are represented at this Ceremony. Our Units were tasked with collecting the peacelight and then distributing the flame to all BSA Scouts and their families throughout Europe and then to the eventual destination of North and South America.
A highlight of the event was the televised reading of our wish by a member of our Troop “On behalf of the Boy Scouts of America, Transatlantic Council and the Greater New York Council, with a special prayer to the scouts across the Eastern Seaboard because of Hurricane Sandy, we light this candle with a call to every man, woman and child on earth regardless, of race, sex, or religion to unite by striving for a world full of peace, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The fact that all of our great nations scouts are here today is the proof that our world has a will for peace and tolerance, yet beyond these doors, there is stressing conflict and separation constantly churning. In the end, we are all human beings, no better or worse than our neighbors, friends, and foes. We will always have our differences. Those differences possess the opportunity to unite us all. Diversity can be Unity. Together, we are individuals, and together we can all call for peace”.
Being that this very special event takes place each year in our home town of Vienna, Troop 427 takes pride and looks forward to our continued involvement and has dedicated to partner with the Association of Boy Scouts and Girl Guides of Austria to ensure the sustainability, vitality, future and success of the ceremony for many years to come.
