One for Everyone (One for Every Juan)

Scouting or the Scout Movement is a movement that aims to support young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, that they may play constructive roles in society, with a strong focus on the outdoors and survival skills. In the Philippines there are two scouting movements, one of which is the Boy Scouts of the Philippines. The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and R.A. 7278, describes Scouting as "a voluntary, nonpolitical, educational movement for young people, open to all without distinction of origin, race or creed, in accordance with the purpose, principles and method conceived by the Founder". The Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) is the national Scout organization of the Philippines. Its mission is to imbue in the youth the love of God, country, and fellowmen; to train young people to become responsible leaders; and to contribute in nation-building. Although the word “Boy” is very evident in the name of the organization, pursuant to the BSP National Office Memorandum, No. 47, S. 2006, the Boy Scout of the Philippines can accept girls in the Senior Scout Section (13 to 19 years old) in the said movement. This allows the project to extend its reach to more people.

According to research conducted in 2012 by Richard Lerner, a Tufts University researcher, Scouting made a huge impact on values-development when compared to non-Scouts. These include cheerfulness, helplessness, obedience, kindness, hopeful future expectations, and trustworthiness. This is why the project promotes Scouting, as an avenue for people, not only the youth, but for everyone to be given the chance learn more about skills, learn more about survival, to interact with each other, and to learn more about their god.

The One for Everyone (One for Every Juan) project encourages everyone to join the Scouting movement, but it also aims to immerse four important sectors in scouting; these are the least, the lost, the last, and the marginalized. The least are the children who were left by their parents when they were younger and now they are staying in an orphanage, our recipients will be from the Sto. Nino Orphanage, Bacolod City. The lost are the children who have committed crimes, or as also called, children in conflict with the law or CICL, our recipients are from the Social Development Center of Bacolod City. The last are the aged who have been left in the home for the elderly or a nursing home, our recipients will be coming from the St. Vincent De Paul Home for the Elderly, Bacolod City. The marginalized are the people who have not been given equal opportunities because of their disability, the students with special needs or the SSN, the recipients in this sector will be from the Bacolod City Special Education Center. The project is expected to run for a year. This will not be limited only to boys, but also to girls because we are promoting gender equality in the movement. The project will focus on each sector for two months each, and will meet twice a month, every other Saturdays. In this Saturdays, they will have an activity for 2 hours and a feeding program. The activities that will be happen will be the following: orientation on Scouting and Scouting Ideals on the first Saturday, the investiture rites on the second Saturday, skills on the third Saturday, and on the fourth Saturday is the culminating activity which is the campfire wherein Scouts and the recipients of the project can showcase their talent and interact with each other. The recipients will also be given the complete Scout Type – A Uniform and will be registered in the Boy Scouts of the Philippines. Even if the project finishes, the recipient of the project will be visited by the Eagle Scouts every month for updating and to interact with each other.

Although the project will only run for a year, it will have lifelong effects not only to the recipients but also to the Scouts that will help implement this project. With this, we aim to promote diversity and inclusion, not only in the Scouting Movement, but also to the community and to the nation, and hopefully, the world.

In the end of the project, we aim to produce scouts who are eager to achieve the Eagle Scout Rank, the highest rank in the Senior Scout Section of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, that will also be passionate in encouraging others in joining the Scouting Movement and creating a better future through the present while learning from the past. As the famous line of the World Organization of the Scout Movement goes; “Scouts creating a better world”.
