National Challenge 2021-Johannesburg
This project forms part of the Scouts South Africa, National Challenge for the Cub Programme. It is a wonderful initiative which provides guidelines to include activities and smaller projects related to a few of the SDGs. We do this Challenge annually, and each year the SDGs change. This year we did SDG6, 7, 8 & 11.
Our goal is to keep reminding our children about being more responsible towards the environment and people.
Most of the project took place at our Scout Hall - 1st Bryanston in the northern suburb of Johannesburg.
We made it work by incorporating the SDGs into our Cub Programme.
We made Tippy Taps which allows the children of disadvantaged communities to wash their hands with soap and water. The tap makes use of materials which is being re-used and can also later be recycled when it is no longer effective. These will be donated to a small community school in the near future.
We also encouraged awareness amongst our children with regards to cleaner energy choices, saving water, encouraging entrepreneurship, etc.
I have learnt that encouraging new and more responsible behaviour needs to be repeated often. This then ensures that our youth start to "live" the new way of doing things. If each of us makes a difference, it will result in a much larger difference, which positively impacts the environment and society.
