Meerkat's Clean Up

Our Meerkat Group (5&6yrs) visited our local park, Radloff Park and learnt about the Cape River Crab and the bird life. We discussed the importance of keeping waste from waterways and seas. We then walked through a section of the park and through the riverway to pick up litter and tidy up the area thus making it cleaner and safer for the people who regularly use the park to walk dogs and the wildlife such as the crabs and many water birds.
We met in a group and had an information discussion then donned gloves and collected all the litter we could find and took it away to be disposed of appropriately.
The removal of litter from the Lourens River creates and clean and safe environment for the local wildlife and the residents of Somerset West who use the park daily. it reduces the amount of rubbish entering the sea a few short KMs from where we were in the Strand and therefore impacts the ocean positively too. It also raised awareness of our actions in the youth who are our next generation.
We could have allocated even more time to allow us to clear more from a greater section of the park and advertised the session to cubs nearby to increase participation.
