Mangrove Planting Day 9

Mangroves serve as great barriers that protect coastlines from rapid erosions. Other than that, mangrove forests are good carbon sinks, which help to combat against climate change. Realizing this project is a monthly program, it motivated me to participate in my second mangrove planting. It was also a way to help me progress in my efforts to increase my ecological footprint.
This project was carried out in Taman Alam Kuala Selangor, an environmental conservation park under the Malaysian Nature Society. It was organized by the park committee members. Each participants were required to plant at least 10 mangrove saplings. Participants were briefed on the methods of mangrove planting before the planting activity began.
This project has benefited the coastal communities of Kuala Selangor as an effort to rebuild its eroding coastlines. This further improves their economic activities, which are tourism and fishing. Other than that, the project had contributed in rebuilding Kuala Selangor's largest carbon sink and biosphere reserve.
From this project, I had learnt that the awareness of environmental protection among participants were increasing, as it is the goal of the Earth Tribe Initiative of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. I would like to contribute my effort as an intern in the park in the near future.
