Litter Free Ambassadors of Singapore

Litter Free Ambassadors of Singapore

The slogan “Singapore is a Clean Country” requires huge effort to live up to. This is especially so after events such as countdown to the new-year, marathons, Chingay Parade, and our National Day Celebrations. While there may be employed cleaners who can clean up after these events, the scouts have started to get involved in doing their part in keeping Singapore litter free. There are two moods to this project: a) after major events b) school initiated activities in parks and gardens Litter Free Ambassadors will go out armed with tongs or gloves, and trash bags. Rather than be litter pickers only, they also engage in public awareness and engage members of the public at events, reminding them of the negative impact of litter, and encourage public to take ownership of their rubbish. IF recycling points are available, Litter Free Ambassadors will also suggest which items are better disposed in the recycling bin and which are to be thrown as trash. a) Chingay Night Fiesta - 21Feb2016 (4hrs x 40pax) b) Chingay Parade Bishan - 2March2016 (2hrs x 6pax) c) SJIJ cubs clean Bishan Park 2 - 4April2016 (2hrs x 55pax) d) National Day Parade - 9Aug2016 (4hrs x 30pax) e) SJIJ cubs clean Bishan Park 1 - 21Aug2016 (2hrs x 50pax) f) SJIJ cubs clean Fort Canning - March 2017 (2hrs x 55pax) g) ACS cubs clean Sembawang Beach June 2017 (2hrs x 40pax) h) National Day Parade - 9Aug2017 (5hrs x 70pax) i) SJIJ cubs clean Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West 24July2017 (2hrs x 55pax) j) SJIJ cubs clean Bishan Ang Mo Kio Park 16Apr2018 (2hrs x 50pax) k) Clean and Green Ambassadors (NDP) 9 Aug 2018 (5hrs x 60pax) Reflections to be an ambassador, a degree of interaction with the public is important. often, the new scout to this project misunderstands the project - they think we are here to pick litter. it is the leaders' duty to engage and educate the scout, that they be able to serve as ambassadors in public events. scouts and cubs whom i have interacted with tend to realise pretty fast that they will have less litter if they are proactive - hand out bags to people who are having a picnic and encourage them to bag their trash - this reduces the problem of rubbish flying off and creating unsightly mess. Once all realise the impact of litter, and what is at stake, the amount of litter reduces drastically.
