Listening Ear for Scouts with Special Needs

I was inspired to start this project because every Scout deserves to be heard and included. At camp, I saw that Scouts with special needs sometimes struggled to express themselves. I wanted to create a safe space where they could share openly and feel supported. My goal was to build trust, encourage confidence, and ensure no one felt left behind—reminding me that Scouting is about care, service, and togetherness.

I began by sharing the idea with camp leaders and gaining their support. Then, I prepared simple tools like listening cards and safe spaces for Scouts with special needs. With the help of volunteers, we held short sessions during camp activities, ensuring a calm and welcoming environment. We listened closely, encouraged participation, and made sure every Scout felt safe, included, and valued.

Through this project, I learned the importance of patience, empathy, and active listening. Every Scout has unique ways of expressing themselves, and creating an inclusive space requires flexibility and understanding. I also realized that teamwork and collaboration with leaders and volunteers are essential to success. Most importantly, I discovered that small acts of care can build confidence, trust, and a strong sense of belonging for Scouts with special needs.
