Light a House This Christmas (Scouts Go Solar Kenya)
Light A House This Christmas is a community development project that involved provision of a solar set (D. Light T200) and a care pack to a vulnerable family in my rural community (Meru, Kenya) on Christmas Day 2020. I drew motivation to formulate and implement the project from Scouts Go Solar ToT training held at Kaiyaba Scouts Centre in November 2020. The project beneficiaries have never been connected to the national power grid and therefore they have been using conventional kerosene lamps and charcoal stoves for reading, house lighting and other household operations at night.
The D. Light T200 has the following combination of functions:
- An ambient side lattern that is 18x brighter than keroseneand lights for upto 8 hours.
- A bright torch function with a beam lenght of 1 kilometre.
- An inbuilt power bank that charges mobile phones via a USB port.
- An external solar panel to charge the D. Light T200 solar set.
The project promotes and aligns with United Nation's SDG 7: Affordable and Clean energy and SDG 13: Climate Action which include:
- Ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energies services.
- Increase substantially the share ofrenewable energy in the national energy mix.
- Improve the national rate of improvement in energy efficiency.
The expected results of the project are:
- Longer periods of learning for the school going child in the household.
- Longer economic hours for the household breadwinner.
- Reduced accidents often caused by kerosene lamps.
- Comfortable and healthy house living.
