Leaving the World in a Better Shape Than the Way it Was Found
On Saturday, December 1st, 2012 Costa Rica, a small country in Central America organized a Telethon to help the orthopedic departments of the National Children's Hospital and another hospital also dedicated to the care of children. The entire country participates in this two day event. Multiple corporations, organizations and individuals pitch in to make the goal of rising money for these wonderful cause. The Organización de GuĆas y Scouts de Costa Rica (Costa Rica Girl and Scouts Organization) took part of this event from all corners of the country and together raised about 16% of the gross collected by the Telethon, which this year surpassed $1 million 600 (US Dollars). In a telephone interview to the Unit leader Luis Fernando Montenegro of Group 79 from Los Lagos, Heredia, we found out that about 115 members of the group, from Cub Scouts to Girl and Boy Scouts, Venturers and Explorers, parents and members of the Executive Committee participated from 8:00am to well past 10:00pm on Saturday."Our Parents Committee prepared meals for lunch and snacks for the morning and the afternoon so young girls and scouts would stay available throughout the day. Our group provides these meals at a cost that we consider as our humble donation to the Telethon" said Luis Fernando.Although the event only takes one day, it takes the parents committee more than a month in preparations for permits, requests and coordination. There are members in the community that await the arrival of the young girls and scouts with their colorful uniforms, as they have done it every year, to give their contribution in the sealed tin cans. The trust and confidence in their presence is wonderful.Claudia Cordero, a leader in the Group 79 also expressed that this is one of the many events in which the young members put forth their best effort to help others, to leave this world in a better shape than they found it. Children and young members as well as the leaders and members of the parent committees were happily involved collecting money at various localities. The smiling faces and energy of these young members are a true reflection of the promise:..."help others in any circumstance."
