As part pf JOTA/JOTI 2016, Joey Scouts (6-7 years old) and Cub Scouts (8-10 years old) from Birralee Scout Group and Well Station Scout Group learned about the Messengers of Peace program, came up with ideas for community services, and created peace posters. In total 55 Joeys and Cubs took part in the activity throughout the day. This was the first stage of a wider project to encourage youth members and Leaders within the area to undertake Messengers of Peace projects and contributes this global service activity. The activity was designed to build awareness of the program, and started with an introduction to the Messengers of Peace program, the website, and the requirements for earning the badge. The youth members discussed what peace means to them – it is not just the absence of war, rather it is about doing good turns, showing understanding and kindness, learning about others, and helping people. Together, these small acts of kindness will make for a better world for all. The Joeys and Cubs then brain stormed ideas for community service that they could carry out in the local community. They decided that simple things, such as playing Pokemon GO with others, could go a long way to building peace around them. There was a call to action for them to go back to their Joey Mobs and Cub Packs and encourage their Leaders to help them run a projects they had come up with. Finally in small groups the Joeys and Cubs created peace posters, incorporating into them motifs of peace such as flowers, people hold hands, and peace signs. In doing this the Joeys and Cubs took the first step on their journey toward becoming Messengers of Peace. Birralee Scout Group and Well Station Scout Group are both located in Canberra, Australia.
