The International Scout Peace Camp

The International Scout Peace Camp

Even from the start, the Peace camp was a promise of new and exciting adventures, where we all Scouts were going to have the opportunity to share together our culture. In a beautiful Indonesian designed scenario, four big lion-shaped masks and traditional dances welcomed more than 500 Scouts at the official "mystique" opening ceremony. Fun was just about to begin, when a Scout, who has created a "Messengers of Peace" song, started to play, and talking about friendship, how to create bridges with love, peace and understanding around the world. Hand by hand, and with the rhythmic beats of music, representatives from all the countries danced together. The energy was so contagious that adults and authorities stood up to dance all together in a big celebration of friendship. The ceremony ended with all Scouts performing world music with a traditional Indonesian instrument, the Angluk. Each one of us, guided by the music leader, was a tune, so at the end we were playing and creating music together! The next five days were about Community service, Peace workshops, Leadership activities, Messengers of Peace trainings, and Cultural exchanges!   Cultural Gathering night – the night had also a less formal but yet more fun welcome for participants. It was the time to share our own traditions. Many countries presented national songs, dances with costumes, Scout games and music, to start bonding in a night of fun and creativity. Community Service - young people from different countries joined the sub-camps and visited four different cities to do community service. This experience was far from being just a visit. All participants were welcomed by community families as guests. Messengers of Peace Network Training - 70 new Network Promoters were trained to start the national MOP team and connect the Indonesian Scouts with the global network. Young leaders learned about the platform, registered themselves as members, and started promoting it on the camp to other participants. Peace Youth Forum - the last but yet most important activity was the Youth Forum, where we all shared the ideals of the Messengers of Peace global network, and together we have created a Youth Declaration of Peace: “Peace is not a final destination but a continuous process. Every Scout is capable of creating peace. Through our minds, words, and actions, we will prove and demonstrate that peace is possible. We, the participants of the International Scout Peace Camp (ISPC) 2013, Indonesia, are committed to be Messengers of Peace”, declaration made as a global commitment of Scouts from the six different regions.
