I am a Messenger of Peace - A story by Oliver Lim
I decided to put my plans into action.
Apart from raising some money, I decided to help run a Scouts of the World Award (SWA) Discovery Workshop to educate the troop’s Scouts on the UN’s Millennium Development Goals so that they can one day achieve their SWA, to share international cultures to them and to help them to achieve their merit badges.
My camp experience with the Ticket to Life Scouts was amazing. I learnt so much from them just as I thought that they did from me. I was able to open their eyes to a world of cultures beyond their homes through my cooking and presentations on Singapore and Scotland. I was able to empower them to serve their communities through the SWA workshop. I raised US$500 and it went to the purchasing of new school shoes. I believe that I was able to inspire them to dream. I was able to inspire them to hope for a better world. I, with their leaders, was able to teach them skills like apathy, trust, communication, leadership and brotherhood. In return, I saw true Scouting in action.
The Scouts were able to enjoy their time away from the harshness of living on the streets. They were able to feel like children. They were able to believe in a future they never imagined. I knew that I had contributed to the objectives of the TTL programme. I helped give them a ticket to life.
I was able to make a big difference in the lives of others through my actions. They were not very big but I believe that they were impactful.
Scouts are messengers of peace and I believe that we, no matter how young or old, can make a difference. You can be one too!
