Helping in small ways even in lockdown!
We were trying to use Scouts in Action month as a platform to have our cubs think of the bigger world they live in and how they can help in even a small way. All our cubs were excited to try and find a SDG that suited them that they could work on to help make a better world.
We had our cubs work on a projected based on an SDG of choice during our latest lockdown. It was a good way for them to still be engaged and to think about how ever small action can help. Most chose to go with projects they could use in their backyard (bee/bug hotels for instance) so they could see the immediate results. Others took time to think about areas they would like to go back to once out of lockdown and what they could do to improve them.
Most of our cubs managed to execute their desired project. They each had a chance to share with their pack what they learnt and how they could implement their findings into every day life to help. One chose Zero Hunger for instance - they used every last bit of food in their fridge. What they couldn't eat they could use in a compost bin for the worms which helps in their veggie patch for good health for instance.
Each of our cubs now has a better appreciation for what they take for granted and how small actions can lead to helping others. Some are continuing on their journey (cleaning up a space near their home for instance) so others can see what they do and they can encourage others to follow their lead. Next time it would be great if not in lockdown that we could organise a day event to really show the cubs how their actions can impact for the greater good (i.e. tree planting).
