Gutter Guardians: Protecting Roads from Erosion

The government has made a substantial investment to pave the road, but due to the heavy rainfall, the gutter has become clogged and poses a risk of erosion to the road. If the road becomes eroded, it would result in a significant financial burden on the government's budget, and the community would have to endure poor road conditions. Cleaning the gutter was a way for the scouts to give back to our community and improve the quality of life of the people living nearby.
Our project was implemented along a road (from zero till school junction), where heavy rainfall had caused a gutter to become blocked and at risk of erosion. In response to this environmental challenge, a group of 22 scouts volunteered to desilt the gutter and prevent further damage. The scouts worked together to clear debris and other blockages from the gutter, allowing rainwater to flow freely and reducing the risk of erosion.
By clearing out the gutter, the scouts helped to ensure that rainwater could flow through it properly, which in turn reduced the risk of erosion and damage to the road. The project helped to ensure the safety of local residents and commuters who travel on the road. It can be estimated that around 600 people, including local residents, commuters, students and businesses, benefited from the project.
One of the key learnings from this project is the importance of community service and volunteerism. By volunteering our time and effort to clean the gutter, the scouts have demonstrated commitment to serving the community and making a positive impact on the environment. In terms of improvement, we must involve local government officials or other community organizations to ensure that the project is properly coordinated and that the volunteers have access to necessary resources and support.
