GENDER DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN SCOUTING

In my community there are more women and girls who are less educated compared to men. Women and girls face a number of challenges for the them to go far with their education due to early pregnancies, early marriages, the community values more boy child education. As a result women and girls in the society as well as in scouting do not take part in leadership positions as they look down themselves. The project empowered the women and girls in the community with leadership skills.
The project was carried out in Nkhatabay the northern part of Malawi with the support from Messengers of Peace. We recruited 35 young women from different backgrounds in the society and get engaged with them for scouting. We trained the women as scout leaders and imparted them with scout skills that has enabled them to run scout troops in the society. These women have led into the increase of membership in the districts as well as national level as more than 500 scouts have being recruited.
The project has greatly empowered the women in the society through leadership training. The women have been well equipped with scout materials such as books, uniforms, scarves and Women are able to showcase their potential in the community through shaping the lives of young people in their various troops. Through the project the Association of Malawi gained 35 scout leaders who have greatly led to the increase of scout membership as 500 scouts have been recruited through the effort of women.
Leadership as been the main core i have learnt from this project as i have been working with my fellow scout leaders within the district as well as our NSO team mobilising young girls and women in the society as well as in scouting to be part and parcel of the project. In the same vain I have seen the importance of involving everyone in the community in order to achieve a great goal.
