Scout Go Solar. Heard of it before? Many who have heard about this event but do they actually know what content lies inside of this program. Here, I would like to share my experience of learning about The Future of Energy: Scout Go Solar. The webinar was live using the platform Microsoft Team as well as in KLKM’s Facebook. It was held from 18 December to 20 December 2020.This theme was led by Hasnina haji Abdul Rahman, the HQ Commissioners Rover Scouts Malaysian Universities and colleges, Scout Go Solar.

 In this webinar, it comprises 4 slots with 5 topics which are Introduction to Scout Go Solar, The Sun is the Source of life (Matahari Sumber Kehidupan), both of these topics discussed are by Miss Nor Azlin Mat Noor. Next, we have Mr Zahirah Hamzah that spoke about the Impact of Sun (Impak Cahaya Matahari pada kesihatan & alam sekitar), We also have the asteem Assoc Prof Ts Dr Mustaffa Ibrahim that discuss the usage of Solar energy (Kegunaan Tenaga Solar) and Finally we had Miss Lau Hooi Lin to closed the session with the topic Go Solar: My Sunshine Journey.

On the first day of the webinar, we had Miss Nor Azlin, the HQ Assistant Commissioner Rover Scouts Go Solar presented the Introduction of the Sun is the Source of life where she spoke about the star that illuminates the earth, the Sun itself. Here, she explains that we can obtain solar energy to generate electricity such as photovoltaic, etc. We also learn the advantages and disadvantages of solar energy but from what I learn, there’s definitely more advantages of using solar energy. It a renewable clean energy, it does not pollute the environment, it does not require any fuel, and since my country is Malaysia, our country is situated on the equator. So, we are blessed to receive so much sunlight. Most importantly, by using solar energy, it saves cost!

After we learn about our sun, the session is proceeded by Mr Zahirah Hamzah discussing about the impact of the Sun on our health and the environment.  In this slot he mentioned briefly about the ozone layer that protects life on earth from the brilliant sun. From what I learn from this slot, the harmful effects of ozone depletion can vary from skin cancer to organism mutation. Aside from that, we also got to learn more about ultraviolet rays (UV) and their effects as well as heat stroke. I did mention that Malaysia is situated on the equator so the probability to get heat stroke is high if we are not careful enough. Mr Zahirah also provided tips in order to stay safe and hydrated.

On the second day of the Scout Go Solar series, 19 December 2020 we have the esteem Assoc Prof Ts Dr Mustaffa Ibrahim that presented the third theme of the series which is the usage of solar energy in such detail. In this topic he discusses how we can utilize solar energy by using various types of equipment that captures solar energy and converts into different types of energy. One of few contraptions that he explains in this webinar is the water heating whereby they use solar panels to capture the solar energy and converts them into heat energy. While at it, he also discusses the Photovoltaic use of Solar energy. How it works in detail and provided illustrations while he explains it. The next subtopic he presented was the usage of solar energy. Where we can use solar energy to power contraptions such as Solar bike/trailer, Solar cooking and many more.  

Finally, the session was concluded by Miss Lau Hooi Lin with the slot called Go Solar: My Sunshine Journey. In this session, Miss Lau Hooi Lin shares her journey through Scout Go solar. Here she explains on how to execute Showcasing Roadshow and tips to plan a SgS roadshow. I truly felt inspired listening to her stories and journey. Somehow, she managed to instilled motivation in me to do Scout Go Solar activities. As far she explains, its actually quite easy to execute. The first is the always raise awareness about Scout go Solar to the public. Once completed, we can proceed executing the Scout Go Solar activities that can help improving the community lives. I truly enjoy this webinar series and it helps me to increase my understanding and knowledge about Scout Go Solar.
