THE FUTURE OF ENERGY SCOUT GO SOLAR
Hello Everyone!
Greetings from Malaysia!
Salam Pengakap!
The Future Of Energy Scout Go Solar Report
My name is Dhurges Kumar S/O Kasivishva Nathan and I am representing on behalf of my Scouts Council from Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Polytechnic. I have joined the webinar session (The Future Of Energy : Scout Go Solar) from the 18th to 20th December 2020. It was conducted from the Microsoft Teams application which was very convenient for all the students as their online classes are being carried out at there as well.
The first webinar session on the 18th of December have briefly explained to us regarding the two themes which is “Matahari adalah Sumber Tenaga” and “Impak Matahari kepada Alam Sekitar dan Kesihatan Manusia”. Therefore, the first theme was conducted by Madam Nor Azlin Mat Nor and the second theme was conducted by Sir Zahiran Bin Hamzah. Madam Nor Azlin have briefly explained regarding the Scout Go Solar badge and what are the criteria for us to receive the badge. The main safety features of any Scout Go Solar program is you have to wear on black sunglasses throughout the activity period. The main reason of this is to get rid of any illness as the SGS activity is mostly outdoors and under the sun. The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is a nearly perfect sphere of hot plasma, heated to incandescence by nuclear fusion reactions in its core, radiating the energy mainly as visible light and infrared radiation. It is by far the most important source of energy for life on Earth. Its diameter is about 1.39 million kilometres (864,000 miles), or 109 times that of Earth. In its core the Sun currently fuses about 600 million tons of hydrogen into helium every second, converting 4 million tons of matter into energy every second as a result. There are some advantages and disadvantages of the sun. Hence, the advantage of the sun is that the UV rays help your body make this nutrient, which is important for your bones, blood cells, and immune system. It also helps you take in and use certain minerals, like calcium and phosphorus. Therefore, the disadvantage is that the solar energy occupies a large amount of space and only work when there is sunlight.
Therefore, for the second theme, Sir Zahiran Bin Hamzah have thought us regarding the ozone layer, eclipse of the Sun and etc. The ozone layer is a thin part of the Earth's atmosphere that absorbs almost all of the sun's harmful ultraviolet light. Ozone holes are popular names for areas of damage to the ozone layer. Surprisingly I just have known that the International Ozone Day is celebrated every year on the 16th of September. There are lots of effects from the sunlight which hits us directly due to the thinness of the ozone layer such as sunburn, skin cancer and eye irritation. These greenhouse gas emissions have increased the greenhouse effect and caused Earth's surface temperature to rise. The primary human activity affecting the amount and rate of climate change is greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. There are also some ways to overcome this greenhouse effect which is by recycling, use less heat and air conditioning, plant more trees and etc.
Next, for the second day our session was conducted by our Malaysia Scout Ambassador, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Mustaffa Ibrahim who have spoken about the theme “Kegunaan Solar”. From what I have gained is I came to know that there are 2 ways we can use the solar energy which is Solar Thermal and Solar Photovoltaic (PV). Therefore, Photovoltaic (PV) system coverts light energy directly into electricity and commonly known as “solar cells”. Then, I have gained information regarding the solar box and the parabolic mirrors. The solar box needs more time to heat up than the parabolic mirrors. Parabolic mirror is the special technology of efficient stove that saves wood and smoke as well.
For the last session on the 20th of December the session is conducted by Miss Lau Hooi Lin who is also our Malaysia Scout Ambassador. Our last theme is Go Solar! And will be fully conducted by Miss Lau itself. Miss Lau had shared with us lots of information and tips about planning our own program with also a low budget which could be a successful one. Miss Lau had done lots of Roadshow to make people understand more on the Solar Energy. Miss Lau had also shared the structure of sharing which is from Self, Groups, Community, Country (NSO), and finally Region (APR). This shows that you don’t have to start big and you can just start doing with a small group or community and most importantly quality means more than quantity.
Lastly, I am very proud for being a part of this wonderful webinar session which have been contributed by almost 60 scout members. This program is defenitely an example to show that no matter what are the circumstances that we are going through, no one can stop us from Scounting. I would want to request for more participants to take part in all the upcoming events and contribute to the society as much as they can. Thank You and Happy Scouting Everyone!
