Every year 4th of June is a red letter day in the history of Bhutan. 28 years ago on this particular day, Gyeltsuen Ashi Juetsen Pema Wangchuk, the Queen of Bhutan was born, the second of the five children. Having done her schooling in Bhutan and India, she graduated from London. Her gracefulness, decency, modesty and restraint are qualities of a great queen in the making.
The World Environment Day coincides with the birthday of Her Majesty, the day was celebrated at CCS with Lam Neten, Chukha Dzongkhag, being the Chief Guest for the occasion. Her Majesty is the Royal Patron for the protection of the Environment in Bhutan.
The program started with the Lighting of Butter Lamps for the long life, health and happiness of the Queen. Madam Sangay Dema, the Officiating Principal of CCS, then delivered the Welcome Speech. She set the tone by sharing some alarming facts about the usage of plastics, the theme of this year's World Environment Day being: Beating Plastic Pollution. Every minute some 1 million plastic bottles are being bought world over. Single use of plastics is choking our planet. She reminded the august gathering consisting of officials from the Dzongkhag along with Dr. Manish from Tsimalakha Hospital, that we MUST take action now with the pledge to safeguard our environment.
Madam Sangay Dema's speech was followed by the speech of the Chief Guest. Next, Mr. Tenzin Wangchuk, enlightened the audience about the contributions made by the Queen, Ashi Jitsen Pema. A video clip regarding the Protection of the Ozone Layer containing the Message of Her Majesty was shown. Mr. Tenzin Wangchuk concluded his presentation with the pledge to rededicate ourselves to serving the Tsa-Wa-Sum with utmost loyalty. Then Dr. Manish took over. His presentation ranged from The Ill-effects of Plastics on Our Health, to how plastics are produced, to the Challenges facing humanity in the form of plastics in the 21st century. He brought an end to the presentation with the request that 'every small contribution from each one of us will make a huge difference.' There was a skit presented in the middle.
Clean Bhutan -whose responsibility is it? Our environment is our pride. Clean Bhutan. Let’s do it now . The next presenter was Mr. Sangay Norbu from the Dzongkhag. He started by quoting what has now become a very familiar quote, His Majesty, the Fifth King's Address to the National on the occasion of the National Day Celebrations in Trongsa. He spoke at length about the Policies, Acts & Regulations, 3 main Types of Wastes, Issues & Challenges. The Waste Management Coordinator of CCS then shared the problems of waste management in our school, the proposal, Common Practices and Challenges. His speech on the Newer Approach to dealing with Waste Management was displayed and elaborated in the form of models just outside the New MPH by the other club-coordinator, Mr. Puran Nepal. If the proposal, backed up by the Dzongkhag authorities, comes into effect CCS will be a plastic-free zone very soon.
The morning-long program concluded with the awarding of prizes to the winners of the Banner Contest to mark the occasion. XII Sci B and A secured the second and third position respectively, while XA secured the top honors.
The Event was rounded off with a very delicious lunch to the staff and guests, offered by the Dzongkhag.
