Cubs to their bit to clean up the community
After the rains that we had in Gauteng, we have a major issue with rubbish along the Hennops River.
As a District we decided to go and clean up along the river that flows through the Irene Dairy Farm.
With the clean up we also worked on our Mini-sass badge and with the aid of an Enviromental scientist checked the water quality.
With no sunrises all we found was red worms in the water.
Everyone armed with kitchen gloves and black bags went down to the river and picked up plastic packets and other rubbish from the floor and out of the trees.
Shaking off the excess sand in order not to make the bags too heavy.
Thee bags were put at the gate for the farm to collect and to dispose of.
Cleaning along the Hennops river is a major under taking and there are many groups that attempt to keep the river banks clean.
This cleanup benefits the Irene milk farm directly, but indirectly will affect the community, by preventing the rubbish from being swept further down stream.
Unfortunately with the amount of rubbish and us only working with the cubs, it sometimes felt like we didn't make a dent into the environment
The shops need to do away with plastic packets.|
More emphasis needs to be made on how to dispose of things like disposable nappies.
