Cubs ans Scouts visit MTR Smit children's home
On 20th July 2013, 15 Algoa Cubs and Scouts visited the MTR Smit children’s home to spend a morning of Scout activities and games with the children of the home, in celebration of the 67 minutes for Mandela Day. Prior to the start of the formal program, Scouts and their parents helped set up a Spiderweb frame and a simple climbing wall at MTR Smit. Cubs and Scouts presented a formal flag break ceremony for the children of the home. Although a program of great relay games was prepared for the outdoors, due to the wind, it was decided to take the program inside. Mariechen, an adult leader, first took the floor to talk to the children of the home about what Scouting is all about. Cubs participated in this short presentation showing placards with the key words of the Promise and Scout laws. After this formality, the adult leader got the action going. She divided Cubs, Scouts and children of the home in various mixed groups and proceeded with a good hour of various relay games. The rising levels of laughter and noise in the hall indicated that all the children had a great time.
For lunchtime the children of the home retreated to their own homes and housemothers, but shortly after joined the Cubs and Scouts again outside. These had a fire going by then, and everyone was standing queue to receive a skewer and some bread dough to bake their own twists on the open fire. When the program came to an end, every child of the home received a small individual present and an extra packet of sweets and fruit. Cubs and Scouts were tired, the children of the home were tired and everyone went home after a satisfying play day at the children’s home!
